Smoke is almost pure fine particulate — PM2.5 small enough to slip indoors through the smallest gaps and reach deep into the lungs. During wildfire drift, bonfire season or if a neighbour's wood burner fills your street, a high-airflow MERV-13 purifier is the most effective indoor defence. (For the health and symptom side of smoke sensitivity, see the dedicated smoke allergy resource; this guide is about the equipment.)
MERV-13 plus activated carbon — captures fine particles and absorbs smoke, cooking & musty odours — no proprietary lock-in, ships from the UK.

Smoke particles are overwhelmingly in the PM2.5 range, exactly what MERV-13 captures well. The challenge is volume: smoke episodes flood a room, so you need high airflow to clear it repeatedly, not just a good filter.
What to do during a smoke episode
- Keep windows and doors shut; block obvious draughts.
- Run the purifier on a higher setting — this is when to trade a little noise for more clean air.
