MERV-13 Filter Kits Explained (UK)

If you have looked at our air purifier kits, you will have seen the term MERV-13 attached to every one of them. It is the filtration standard that does the actual work of cleaning your air, yet it is rarely explained in plain terms. This guide covers what MERV-13 means, why we build our replaceable filter kits around it rather than sealed HEPA, and how to keep your kit performing with genuine 3M Filtrete media. Everything here reflects the kits we ship across the UK and EU, tested by Intertek and rated Energy Star Most Efficient 2026.

What MERV-13 actually means

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, the standard rating scale used to describe how well a filter captures airborne particles. The scale runs from 1 to 16, and the higher the number, the finer the particles a filter can trap. MERV-13 sits near the top of the practical domestic range.

A MERV-13 filter captures roughly 93% of airborne particles on a single pass. That includes pollen, household dust, pet dander, mould spores, smoke and fine PM2.5 particulate. In other words, it targets the everyday triggers behind hay fever, allergies and poor indoor air, as well as the ultrafine particles produced by cooking, traffic and wildfire smoke.

Why we build these kits around MERV-13, not sealed HEPA

The obvious question is why not simply use HEPA everywhere. HEPA filters capture around 99.97% of particles per pass, which sounds decisively better. In practice the trade-off is more nuanced.

A sealed HEPA filter is dense. Pushing air through it takes far more fan power, which means more noise and more energy for the same volume of air moved. MERV-13 media is less restrictive, so our fans move a much larger volume of air at low resistance. Because clean-air delivery depends on both filter efficiency and airflow, a MERV-13 kit that moves a lot of air often cleans a room faster, and more quietly, than a HEPA unit straining against a dense filter.

The result is a kit that runs at under 35 dB, roughly the level of a quiet library, while still removing the vast majority of what you care about. For the overwhelming majority of homes, MERV-13 at high airflow is the more effective real-world choice. We are happy to be honest about the difference: if you need certified single-pass HEPA performance for a clinical or specialist setting, that is a different product. For clean, breathable air at home, MERV-13 wins on the balance of speed, noise and running cost.

Genuine 3M Filtrete media

Not all MERV-13 media is equal. Our kits use genuine 3M Filtrete filters, which use an electrostatically charged fibre to attract and hold fine particles rather than relying on density alone. That charge is what lets the media capture PM2.5 and smoke while staying open enough to pass a high volume of air.

Using authentic Filtrete media also means consistent, documented performance. Our kits are Intertek-tested and hold the Energy Star Most Efficient 2026 rating, both of which depend on a known, repeatable filter specification. Third-party or unbranded replacements can undermine both airflow and capture, so we recommend sticking with genuine media.

Filter sizes: matching filters to your kit

The filters are standard nominal sizes, so they are easy to source and reorder. Which size you need depends on your kit:

Filters are supplied and replaced in pairs. Because the sizes are standard, there is no proprietary cartridge to hunt for and no risk of being locked into a single supplier. The Fanless Kit is designed for those who already own compatible fans or want the frame and filtration only; you simply add the correct filter pairs for your setup.

When to replace filters, and how the Veya app helps

Filter life depends on how dirty your air is. In a typical UK home, a set of MERV-13 filters lasts around 6 to 12 months. If you are running the kit through heavy wildfire smoke, close to building works, or in a home with several pets, you should expect to replace them sooner, as the media loads with particulate faster.

A loaded filter is a good thing: it means it has been doing its job. But once it is saturated, airflow drops and cleaning slows, so timely replacement matters. The free Veya app tracks your usage and sends a reminder when a change is due, so you are not left guessing or relying on memory. It takes the maintenance decision off your plate entirely.

The running cost is deliberately low. Across a year, filter replacement works out at roughly £2, which keeps genuine, high-performance filtration well within reach as a routine household expense.

How to add filter pairs to a kit

Adding filters is straightforward. When you configure a kit, you can add one or more filter pairs to your order so you have spares on hand for the next change. Because filters are replaced in pairs and use standard sizes, ordering ahead is simple: choose 16x25 pairs for the 5-Fan Luggable or 20x25 pairs for the 7-Fan XL.

Keeping a spare pair in the cupboard means that when the Veya app flags a replacement, you can swap them in immediately with no downtime. We ship both kits and replacement filters across the UK and EU.

Choosing your kit

All three options use the same genuine MERV-13 3M Filtrete filtration; they differ in scale and setup:

Whichever you choose, you get the same core benefits: around 93% particle capture, under 35 dB operation, roughly £2 a year in filters, Intertek testing, Energy Star Most Efficient 2026 rating, free Veya app reminders and UK and EU shipping.

Frequently asked questions

Is MERV-13 good enough compared to HEPA?

For home use, yes. MERV-13 captures around 93% of airborne particles per pass, while HEPA captures around 99.97%. HEPA's density means far higher noise and energy use for the same airflow, whereas MERV-13 lets our fans move much more air quietly. Because clean-air delivery depends on airflow as well as efficiency, a high-airflow MERV-13 kit often cleans a room faster in practice.

What particles does MERV-13 capture?

MERV-13 targets pollen, dust, pet dander, mould spores, smoke and fine PM2.5 particulate, capturing roughly 93% of airborne particles. That covers the common triggers for allergies and hay fever as well as the ultrafine particles from cooking, traffic and wildfire smoke.

How often do I need to replace the filters?

Typically every 6 to 12 months in a normal UK home. Replace them sooner if you are running the kit through heavy smoke, near building works, or in a home with several pets, as the media loads faster. The free Veya app tracks your usage and reminds you when a change is due.

Which filter size does my kit use?

The 5-Fan Luggable uses 16x25 filters and the 7-Fan XL uses 20x25 filters. Both are standard nominal sizes and are supplied and replaced in pairs, so they are easy to reorder.

Are these genuine 3M filters?

Yes. Our kits use genuine 3M Filtrete MERV-13 media, which uses an electrostatic charge to capture fine particles while staying open enough for high airflow. Genuine media is what allows the kits to hit their tested performance, so we recommend against unbranded replacements.

How much do replacement filters cost to run?

Filter replacement works out at roughly £2 a year, keeping genuine high-performance filtration affordable as a routine household expense. You can add filter pairs to your kit order so you always have spares ready for the next change.

Do you ship to the UK and EU?

Yes. We ship both complete kits and replacement filters across the UK and EU. All kits are Intertek-tested, rated Energy Star Most Efficient 2026, run at under 35 dB, and include the free Veya app for filter reminders.
